Many of you will hit the road this weekend or fly the friendly skies or else enjoy the ever-popular staycation situation. Spring break is always a welcome reprieve from our daily lives.
So many of us are bogged down with the pressures of life. Some of those pressures are inevitable: The kids are sick. The dog needs a bath. The pantry is empty. A work deadline is looming. Taxes are due.
Needing a break is natural. Did you know that God planned seven different breaks into the annual calendar for his people in the Old Testament? And he declared one day off each week as well! The Lord is a fan of rest and travel and family time and seeing cool places and eating good food!
We all need a break! We need a break because we are busy and troubled and distracted by many things. Some are very good things. Some are less important.
Sometimes we’re worn out and tired because we’ve been chasing too hard and too long after things that don’t have any eternal value. I’m not talking about things that are inherently sinful or wrong. They may be really good–just fleeting. This includes the endless supply of opportunities in sports and music and academics and clubs. These things can be life-enriching. And they can also be life-sucking.
Only you and I can set the balance in our life pursuits. Do we have time to rest? Do we have time to connect and talk and eat together as a family? Do we prioritize time with the Lord each day?
Maybe this spring break can include a time of careful introspection. Does our regular schedule allow enough margin to abide with Christ and rest on a regular, consistent basis? Or are we running ourselves ragged and becoming distracted by other things? This week off would be a great be a time to reset as needed. And connect with the source of true rest and refreshment!
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear…But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:25, 33).
Happy Spring Break everyone!
