Family Priorities Exercise

Purpose

Every family lives by a set of priorities—whether chosen intentionally or formed by habit and circumstance. Use this worksheet to reflect, discuss, clarify, and prioritize what matters most in this season of your life.

Step 1: Review the List

Below are common areas of family focus. None of them are “wrong.” The challenge is learning how to balance them faithfully and intentionally as God is calling you.

Family & Relationships

  • Marriage health and connection
  • Time together as a family
  • Extended family relationships
  • Children’s friendships and social development
  • Family traditions and shared experiences
  • Personal rest and mental health

Work & Finances

  • Career advancement or professional growth
  • Financial stability
  • Living within means / lifestyle goals
  • Generosity and giving
  • Job flexibility or margin
  • Work satisfaction and purpose

Faith & Church

  • Church involvement / attendance
  • Spiritual growth / personal devotion
  • Family discipleship at home
  • Christian community / friendships
  • Serving or volunteering
  • Missional living / outreach

Children’s Developement

  • Academic achievement
  • Character development
  • College or career preparation
  • School choice (public, private, homeschool)
  • Extracurriculars: Sports, arts, clubs
  • Free time and unstructured play

Health & Lifestyle

  • Physical health, fitness, and nutrition
  • Nutrition and home-cooked meals
  • Sleep and recovery
  • Screen time and technology boundaries
  • Home environment and organization
  • Leisure, travel, or personal hobbies

Step 2: Reflect & Discuss

Use these questions to guide your conversation:

  1. Which three areas feel most important to us in this current season?
  2. Which three currently receive the most time, energy, or money?
  3. How has our family of origin consciously or subconsciously guided our current priorities? How do we feel about that? Do we need to make adjustments?
  4. Where do we sense tension between what we value and how we live?
  5. What would greater alignment with our faith and calling look like?

Step 3: Decide What Comes Next

Circle or highlight the areas you’d like to be more intentional about this year.  Write one simple action step for each.
